Fairtrade Fortnight 2019 Kicks Off Feb 2019

The focus for Fairtrade Fortnight this year is a Living Income for producer communities supported by the #SheDeserves Campaign.

A Living income (defined by The Living Income Community of Practice) is calculated as the net annual income needed for a household to afford a decent standard of living for all members of that household. That means you need to earn enough to eat nutritiously throughout the year, drink safe water and access healthcare. This would also allow you to send your children to school, live in a decent home, save for unexpected setbacks and allow the elderly to retire with dignity.

Farmers’ income often comes from multiple sources such as crop sales, farm business and remittances. To work out whether a farmer achieves a decent living, all of these sources of money are combined and checked against a living income benchmark price. Many of the farmers who grow our food don’t come close to earning a living income. It’s clear that there is a lot of work to do and many industry players to convince.

Reading Fairtrade 2019 Events Announced Jan 2019

2019 sees a range of Fairtrade-friendly events in Reading throughout the year. From a Fashion Show at the Reading International Festival to a Fairtrade inspired Panel Discussion for World Fairtrade Day in May.

However, first up is
Fairtrade Fortnight 2019!

For two weeks each year, Fairtrade Fortnight celebrates the people who live in some of the poorest countries in the world, who are often exploited and badly paid. This year, Fairtrade Foundation is focusing on the people – in particular the women – who grow the cocoa in the chocolate we love so much.

A couple of highlights of what we have planned for Reading Fortnight include:

  •  Nick Dearden, Director of Global Justice Now UK discusses "Trade, Power & Poverty after Brexit" on 27th of February
  • Join us on Friday 8th of March for a celebration of Palestinian Women with Heather Masoud, founder of Zaytoun

Fairtrade Fortnight 2018 - Review Mar 2018

Fairtrade fortnight is a national campaign held in early spring each year by the Fairtrade Foundation and offers an opportunity for Fairtrade events, publicity, meetings and exhibitions throughout the country. The Reading Fairtrade Steering Group organises activities in Reading each year to support the Fairtrade fortnight campaign.

In 2018, there were over 20 events and exhibitions taking place around Reading during Fairtrade fortnight.

Three main events highlighted two campaigns; the first was the UK's Trade Bill after Brexit and how this may affect the Global South. Emile Schultze from Traidcraft Exchange spoke at the University of Reading and RISC on 28th February. Mark Dearn from War On Want talked at RISC on 2nd March.

The second campaign was to highlight the effect of mining metals used to manufacture our technology that fuels exploitation and conflict in the Congo. Activist and TED speaker Bandi Mbubi promoted Fairtrade mobile phones and tech with talks at the University of Reading and RISC on 9th March.
